it was a nice and quiet watch in the theater. nobody said a word for the entire thing and afterwards everyone left silently. that’s how you know it’s good.

See also: funerals, corporate “town hall” meetings, and court cases.

(I’ve not seen it, I’ve only read Weir’s book, so I’m not seriously casting any judgement, I’m just amusing myself – but I was a little dismayed by the huge spoilers in the trailers.)

no, it’s impolite to make noise at the cinema. the only time it happens is when people don’t care about the movie.

It sounds like a sad state of things when it’s polite to stifle laughter when humor happens in front of you, but I’m sure there’s a sane reason for it.

the reason is you care about the people around you. every time i’ve seen an american cinema it’s looked like a nightmare.

The ones near me have been pretty well-kept, but I imagine it varies by site. Either way, I fail to see how laughing at jokes means we don’t care about each other? I usually feel a sense of ease and connection when a theater collectively laughs quietly at a funny moment. A messy theater existing somewhere doesn’t change that moment into a bad one.

it’s just a matter of different atmospheres. people here want to be completely immersed in the experience and someone making noise around them ruins that. even children’s films tend to have completely quiet theatres because everyone is so focused.

Different strokes, I guess. This is a bizarre shot against the US though. I could take the same shot against your country for inverse reasons, but that would be silly.

it’s not insane, it’s just the norm. scandinavians are very reserved people.

you can think something is funny and not laugh. PHM isn’t really a comedy anyway. comedies tend to get more laughs in the cinema because people are primed for it.

Fucking mouth breathers in front of me who confessed they had not read the book. Dont read books. Were annoying all through the movie. I wish had more of the science. Fucking movie was made for none science types. Lots of great scenes in the book could of been in the movie over the stuff they made the fuck up not in the book.

i’ve read the martian, so i know how weir writes. that, combined with watching the movie, makes me want to read the book.

The book is sooooo good. I think I might have enjoyed it more than The Martian.

Big part of that is how Rocky sounds in the Audiobook and I was really bummed out that they did not keep that for the movie.

The book is just… JAZZ HAAANDS!!

Yeah, Ray Porter killed it in the audiobook. Though Ray Porter kills it in everything he reads. If you liked PHM, take a listen to the Bobiverse series.
