This headline is extremely inaccurate. Trump has relatively moderate personal views on abortion (he just wants to win the election so he tries not to alienate voters).

That question response wasn’t Trump trying to talk about mifepristone… it was Trump trying his damnedest to avoid talking about mifepristone.

True. Except I’d argue Trump has zero personal views on any subject. His only “views” are what he thinks he has to say to win.

Remember folks, back in the before times he was a Left Coast Democrat. (Boy does that line piss off his supporters.)

I hate Trump as much as the next guy but Trump has voiced opinions in both directions so maybe tone down the person aiming for accuracy on the subject.

What? How the fuck am I an apologist? He has the moral backbone of a rubber band and just spouts whatever the fuck makes him more likely to get elected - and, once elected, he went hard into anti-choice to court the political favor of senate and house Republicans while helping to stuff the court with Heritage Foundation clowns.

Exactly, it’s not like Trump himself is a fundamental Christian with misguided but deeply held convictions. He is a narcissist that wants adoration, power and to be in a special position where you can dodge consequences.

Can’t wait for Kamala to kick his teeth in at the September 10th debate. I think what OP might be saying is that Trump is a chameleon depending on his audience so in some cases he’s anti abortion and pro abortion in others.

…I mean it’s not like that makes him a good person. A lot of men in those positions of power mostly just want to be able to make their mistress get one after they knock her up from refusing to wear a rubber. There’s a fair amount of people who also want to use it to abort female babies. It’s not like wanting abortion to be legal in and of itself makes you a feminist or even just any kind of decent human being in any way. Honestly to me the fact that they know it’s bullshit and are just using it to rally their asshole voting base is even worse. People are really just randomly pulling knives on their own people at this point. Idk if the ops are that bad or people are just that paranoid by neither one is a good sign of things to come.

There is actually a huge thing to consider with any kind of authoritarian system ideologically: Basically without fail, they will have a “rules for thee, not for me” dynamic behind the scenes. Make abortion illegal? It will still be possible to skirt the rules for the powerful, and pervert the right to control your own body as a woman into the privilege of powerful people - mostly men - to decide if they allow a pregnancy to continue.

Authoritarianism lives, psychologically, from having the people on top, the ones “worthy” in the eyes of ideology, being able to bend or fully circumvent the rules. Even today, this is clearly visible in how rich people, and even more so rich organisations, are treated differently in front of a court, where proper consequences seem to be an exception instead of the rule. This also shows in more fundamental, everyday mechanics of society, think of how the violence monopoly of the state more often than not rests on the tacit acceptance of excessive police violence. Where often, cops and paramilitaries in police roles within states are developing a self-image and identity, along the lines of “to protect society from itself and its horrendous violence, I must become a violent badass” - consciously or unconsciously enjoying the violence and control they can enact, or turning their heads when their colleagues do it, and reserving for themselves and their in-group the privilege to do so.

So, having someone like Trump, a clear narcissistic rapist, being both openly against abortion rights in his political platform while personally holding the belief of abortions being allowed, is no real contradiction at all. He can rest assured that if in power, he would have the privilege to force both consensual mistresses and victims of his assaults to have abortions anyway.

Trump has relatively moderate personal views on abortion (he just wants to win the election so he tries not to alienate voters).

Bullshit, his alleged personal views are meaningless in the face of actions, and his actions say he isn’t moderate in the slightest.

Edited for an example from the beginning of his presidency:

March 2016 – “The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment,” Trump told a MSNBC town hall after being asked: “Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no, as a principle?” After his response, the host then sought a clarification on his use of the word punishment: “For the woman?” And Trump said, “Yeah, there has to be some form.” Following widespread criticism, Trump later walked back his comments in a statement.

He boasts that he ended Roe.

I truly hope there’s an overwhelming response, because if every woman recognized the threat he represents and voted accordingly it would be so very, very satisfying.
