Ayshka Najib, a climate activist based in the United Arab Emirates, put it this way: “Capitalism is only 500 years old—we created these systems, and we can create newer ones rooted in equality, justice and respect for everyone’s rights.”

Not sure where she gets the “500 years” figure. Humans have been herding other beings and owning them as property for much longer than that. That is the root injustice which has led to domination of the female body, destruction of the world’s forests, dysregulation of the world’s climate, and the ongoing holocaust of those who were not fortunate enough to have been born into the class of wealthy, white, land-owning, heterosexual men. Abolishing capitalism requires abolishing speciesism. Once people stop viewing other beings as inferior, the system will cease to function.
