Titled “An Urgent Conversation with the American People,” the livestreamed discussion comes ahead of Congress’ return to session on Monday.
A statement released by both officials’ offices said in part, “Republican leaders have made clear their intention to use the coming weeks to advance a reckless budget scheme to President Trump’s desk that seeks to gut Medicaid, food assistance and basic needs programs that help people, all to give tax breaks to billionaires. Given what’s at stake, these could be some of the most consequential weeks for seniors, kids and families in generations.”
According to the statement, Rep. Jeffries and Sen. Booker plan to speak to shared American values and the nation’s religious and moral underpinnings, and how the budget bill opposes these beliefs. They also plan to affirm to Americans watching the livestream that their voices matter, especially in this moment in time.

They could go on strike, but I’m absolutely certain they’d be arrested if they blocked the entrances to the Capitol building. It would only generate awareness, just like this sit-in.
Creating minor inconveniences isn’t newsworthy, but an elected official getting arrested is.
While I can respect what their trying to do but don’t call it a sit-in because it’s a fucking Sunday, there’s not even a minor inconvenience here.

Insisting on the confines of legality when the opposing side has shed any pretence of legality months (arguably years) ago is… a stance to take. Just not a winning one.
You’re free to believe that. I’m saying that if you’re going to stage a protest, a legal one is better than an illegal one.
And you are free to believe otherwise. But sadly I don’t see legal protests having any effect on a government actively seeking to undermine the rule of law.
If you want to do something illegal, may as well do something more direct. I don’t see a giving an easy win to cops and politicians being very effective either.

this guy has a knack for theatrics; the steps are nearby where he needs be to actually have any meaningful impact, but in broad view of everyone else so that it looks like he’s doing something useful and i bet it’ll work for his presidential campaign.

You do understand that Democrats have minority, right? The Democrats forced multiple 15-day votes that went nowhere. Al Green introduced articles of impeachment that will not get anywhere. What else do you expect them to do while in minority?
Take some queues from Van Hollen and use the power they’ve assembled to get themselves elected, and mobilize themselves and their voters to address the problems directly instead of making large shows of asking Republicans to do the right thing.
You think this is a message to Republicans in Congress? Just like his 25 hour speech, this is a message to the citizens who aren’t paying attention, regardless of party affiliation.
Risk something, take back what’s your’s, do something that you know they might attack you for.
