Today, I watched Vicious Lips (1986), written and directed by Albert Pyun.

What is this? A sci-fi / horror / musical. That’s right, all three at once.

This film follows the exploits of a punk rock girl band – in space. That’s right, these edgy babes are living in the future, trying to make a name for themselves in an ultra exclusive club on a faraway planet.

I’m shocked I’ve never heard of this one since love trashy cult films like this. Apparently, it did not get a wide release. Despite being made in the USA, it was only released there in 2013.

All the music was made by a group called Drock, but I can’t find anything about them on the Internet – all the Drocks that exist are not girl bands.

Lots of cheese and good for a laugh. They don’t make movies like this anymore.

    Albert Pyun is one of those underappreciated b-movie scifi / cyberpunk / action directors, although to be fair he does have an underground cult following.

    My personal favourite is Radioactive Dreams. This is an electric mix of post-apocalypse and a parody of 50’s private eye motifs. It really is a unique experience. Fallout 1/2 were clearly inspired by Radioactive Dreams.

    I will agree with @[email protected], and recommend people avoid anything beyond Nemesis 2, perhaps even just the original Nemesis.

    Some other Pyun movies that I would recommend:

    • Alien from L.A. (1998) - A nerdy (but very attractive) Kathey Ireland takes part in a adventure lightly based on Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”.
    • Knights (1995) - Includes a mix of many of the motifs typically found in Pyun movies. Post-apocalypse, cyborgs, action.

    Always up for some Albert Pyun, in small doses, I couldn’t binge a bunch.

    Vicious Lips is fine but I enjoyed Radioactive Dreams and Cyborg too, although Cyborg 2 is superior. Nemesis and Omega Doom are both OK, Nemesis 2, not so much. The last 5 are part of a loose sequence of films, made even more confusing as there are two competing trilogies. In release order you have:

    • Cyborg (1989)
    • Nemesis (1992)
    • Knights (1993)
    • Cyborg 2 (1993)
    • Cyborg 3 (1994)
    • Nemesis 2 (1995)
    • Nemesis 3 (1996)
    • Omega Doom (1996)
    • Nemesis 4 (1996)
    • Cyborg Nemesis: The Dark Rift (2016)
    • Nemesis 5 (2017)

    Given all the competing interests and edits, it is impossible to watch them in a coherent order and it is unwise to try (Dark Rift is tricky to find, I am unsure it has had a major release) Just dip in if the plot catches your fancy.
