Sadly, I’m way more burned out than Pre-AI and I was a bit before then. (So I guess it just sped up the pace).
I have no desire to come home and work on personal software or devops projects. My Homelab sits in the same state it was since the last real vacation I had. Corporate/industry work has removed all desire for personal development work.
Are they easily hackable? Asking fir a friend…
I feel like the more I use AI at work, the more I feel like it’s replacing the things I actually enjoy doing, leaving me with the leftovers.
The PS5 controller works really well on Bazzite, fwiw. I also used an old PS3 controller with MacOS, iPads and Fedora.
I’m a manager over 5 infra devs, I’ve been pretty strongly against AI since the beginning, but the company has pushed it hard and gave us a “all you can use, see what you can do with it” mandate. It’s hard to push back, so the best I can do is add team wide guardrails. Some things I’ve noticed:
Pros:
- we're able to work on more things simultaneously.
- deployment velocity is way faster
- team members have become less siloed and more full stack
- people are able use AI to do more in depth analysis
- more new issues found and ticketed
Cons:
- less personal ownership
- more time spent pushing back on AI answers (or not and going down time wasting rabbit holes)
- more pressure to do more and invent the "next big thing" instead of focusing on what we already know needs doing
- first step of problem solving is to ask Claude, not actually think about the issue or why it's happening
- less true understanding of how things work together or with different pieces actually do
- more duplication of work
- more "Well Claude said" instead of "I found that"
- less "how do I solve ___" instead "How can I get Claude to solve ___"
- way more huge comments in code, but not readable or human understandable comments. Same with documentation and PR/Commit messages.
And personally, I feel a lot less motivated and like I now have to manage 5 people and 20 extra entry-level/intern level people. I feel pressured by those around me and above me to do more and I have less time… and I feel way less respected, challenged, appreciated, and get no positive dopamine hit from solving issues or getting things done.
AI is likely one of the biggest brain-drain’s ever to hit the industry and it has sapped all of the enjoyment out of my job.
As much as I want to use AI to move my home lab projects forward, I want to enjoy it… and vibe coding my hobby is a great way to make it no longer my hobby, just like it sapped all of the love out of my job. So the lab sits there because I’m mentally drained at the end of the day, and pissed off at the political and technological directions of my hobby.
This makes me worry about anything happening to Steam. I started buying DRM free on GoG a while back and have an extra PC setup that, among other things, syncs games down from GoG so if something happens, I don’t lose my games.
If Steam gets bought out or goes under or whatever else, we’ll be screwed.
The portable BR RW I found last year has a USB-C connection on the drive so you can use whatever cable you want.
Though they do make USB extension cables so you don’t have to bend it weird.
I do still miss the chonky boys though, but the nice thing with USB-C is that it doesn’t needs a separate power cable and plug.
My guess is that it is about to be discontinued because most people were not willing to pay $329 for a keyboard…

I find some irony in the fact that a lot of those that refused to wear masks during Covid are now wearing masks as ICE.
Don’t forget, they stopped reporting a lot of COVID related deaths as COVID a while back. Lots of sweeping things under the rug.
Agreed. My point is more “just because it costs more, doesn’t mean it isn’t still worth it”
But have we thought about all the money and time and gas and everything else that it saves us in the end? Because we can build subways/light rails/public transit… or we can all try to drive to work at the same time and sit in gridlock burning gas wasting time and being pissed off because the roads can’t handle it.
And good luck fixing all the roads and infrastructure to prevent the twice a day gridlock cheaper than this public transit.

That’s not how that works. If they wanted to take those jobs from Americans, they’d just open an office in that country… and probably save a lot of money doing so.
Americans either didn’t want or didn’t qualify for these jobs, no employer goes through the visa process to stick it to Americans, it’s a giant pain in the ass.
