RPGMemes @ttrpg.network•Everything is like D&D if you squint hard enoughEnglish
55·4 days agoOkay, but if your cyperpunk RPG has “d20 plus modifier vs target number” action resolution, 4-8 ability scores, skill bonuses, feats, classes, races/ancestries/backgrounds… You’re going to need to explain how it’s NOT like D&D. And if you proceed to describe PbtA, I will laugh at you.
I won’t shame you for being like D&D. I will shame you for pretending you’re not.

New Communities@lemmy.world•Why is this not a different community spotlighted per day? So the front page, shows off a community that someone doesn't know exists? Instead of going through all these old posts?English
16·5 days agoThis isn’t “lesser known communities that need a spotlight”, this is “new communities”.
Agreed. But they’re still indie. This whole genre is a niche.
TTRPG systems may be well-known and famous to us nerds, so it’s easy to forget that the average person has probably only heard of D&D and a few WoDs. And Pathfinder, of course.
Just to note, “indie company” and “2nd biggest game on the market” aren’t mutually exclusive. This isn’t a big market, and most of it is D&D.

We know how THIS system works - but…
They cast doubt, I point out proof, they deflect to other systems they might be right about. Sounds like they moved the goalposts to me. I don’t need to know which system it is to know it does what we can see it do.

Actually, no, don’t answer. Just stay on your weird family-fucking hill until you die on it, as you so obviously want to. I’m done with you.

33·26 days agoYour permanent ban for defending incest, a situation that is widely agreed to be an abuse of trust in any configuration, thus making consent dubious. Specifically, your response defending a woman who fucked her son, suggesting grooming to be at play.
Once again, is this a cause you want to keep fighting for? Or do you want to just take the damn L already?

20·26 days agoAnd if you ignore the spirit of the rules entirely, you get shitty people doing shitty things while clinging to technicalities. If I say “I technically didn’t steal your watch”, you would still want your watch back.
The solution is to uphold the letter of the rules and, if they are insufficient, you update the rules.

30·26 days agoThe ban fits the spirit, if not the letter, in a sort of “we didn’t think we needed to specify a dog can’t play basketball” situation. I suspect the wording of the rule will be changed to reflect this.

102·27 days agoLeaving aside whether the rule was the right one to use, I will stress that, when it comes to incest, the power dynamics in play make consent dubious at best. This is doubly so for parent/child incest, such as the case you were talking about.

For me, at least, “like D&D” can mean a lot of things. There are some games where you can tell their starting design point was just D&D, and everything else is either a tweak, a replacement or an addition. It doesn’t matter what gets changed, so long as it’s obvious what it was changed from.
The Fantasy Age system does a lot of things differently, but you can still tell they were working with D&D as their base design. You roll 3d6, but you still add your ability (and a skill bonus if you have the skill) and compare it to a target number.
