  • Some 25 years ago when the RIAA was going apeshit over online sharing of music they were happily suing people left and right.

At some point they argued that no computer should ever make a copy of music without a license. The opposition proceeded to demonstrate how computers work. They make many copies of data files while processing them in the CPU, RAM, cache, omin temp files, etc. The judge did temporarily order that only one canopy could be made, but after the education, said fine: if the RIAA wants to let it stand, then they can’t distribute via any computer systems anywhere by their own rules.

In the end, the case was dropped and computers got to keep processing data as per normal.

  • I’m in Berlin, Germany.

Inside the Ringbahn (a circle route train around the city), most of the city is inanely walkable.

Within a few minutes walking if my apartment we have everything for daily needs. Within 15 minutes by public transit we have everything else.

    It’s wonderful.

At the moment I’m having to wait outside a Starbucks in Northern Idaho (family obligations). The sheer pain of the traffic, pollution, noise, and knowing that I can’t walk to anything in a reasonable timeframe (car mandatory life) is awful. It’s my first time back to the US in a year and it’s convincing me minute by minute that I made the correct choice by leaving.

  • The rail upgrades in Germany are ongoing and extensive. The problem is the sheer scale of the work. Germany has a massive rail network, and they’re about 70 years behind on rail maintenance.

It’ll just take time, and fixing sections doesn’t make those sections all fixed if other sections still have breakdowns that cascade over.

The stations are also undersized for the scale of passengers and trains. Those take even longer to fix, often because they decide to go for awesome architecture and non-disruptive tunneling instead of quick and disruptive options.

Germany will sort it out someday, but it’s a 20 year fix, not a two year one.

  • This is the kind of over the top nerding out that makes the world an awesome place.

Why write in Brainfuck? Because we can. Why make a complex mathematical rendering system in Brainfuck? Because we can. Why share it? To be a ruler among princes.

Thank you, crazy techies of the world. I’ll be citing this project for years to come in my classes alongside others like the 32bit cpu in Minecraft and the processor simulator in LaTeX. Fuck yes.
