I love the one response I saw, “wouldn’t that make Katie Miller a sexual bull?” Because there are so many different ways to take it from there, and many don’t paint Stephen Miller in the lights he’d rather be seen publicly.

I want to jump on the pedantry train. Around 36% of eligible voters didn’t cast a ballot for president, so if Trump received 49.8% of the vote, then - in the original terms of “x% of voters out Trump in the White House” - .498 * (1-0.36) = about 32% of voters. Meaning more eligible voters didn’t vote than selected Trump.

The highest voter share went to “abstain”.

It’s one thing for people to be willing to go along with all the bad politicking. It’s just another entirely if Trump’s participation in child rape is publicly proved. That’s a REAL hard pill for most people to swallow.

And this is my point - it’s not about what any one person on Lemmy thinks is what gets you to hell, it’s just what some folks with certain views end up thinking, and sometimes yelling.

Nobody thinks you’re going to hell for having a new idea about quantum gravity. Nobody has set up car bombs over whether or not plucked chickens are human. Political differences do have a very different history with violence, of course.

But when there is a large number of people who are happy to make me feel profoundly wrong for not accepting their deity, or thinking the wrong day is the day God wants us to rest, or who think plenary indulgences are or aren’t a good idea, or if Jesus abolished or fulfilled the old law, or if God thinks we should kill all trans people… we have hit a different territory.

These are not the same thing, and sometimes it is a VERY big deal. Literally life and death.

Look, the list of corrections and amendments we could make to what I said could fill out a book of their own. The Bible of Why The Bible Is Fallible, or whatever.

The Democrats of the Civil War era do not hold the same values as the Democrats of today, same as the Republicans of each era. It is pointless for anyone to act like the name of a party a given politician belonged to 160 years ago means anything in 2025 terms.

I’m gonna write a book that contradicts itself, not give clarification on those parts, leave it up to the readers to figure it out, and base the afterlife on how right they were. Because at least some Christians think they are doing it exactly right, and they will not be having the afterlife they think they will.

My favorite part is how every pastor and many laypeople will have their own particular set of interpretations. Never mind that, at most, only one of those could be fully right, and therefore the rest are doing/believing some things wrong.

Exactly this. If I recall, there’s a principle in at least some IP* law suggesting that each time you don’t defend your absolute ownership of the IP, you are making it easier for others legally get away with infringing in future.

I know just enough to imagine this could wildly differ between patent, trademark, copyright, and whatever other realms there are in IP.

*Intellectual Property, for anyone unfamiliar with or not quite placing the acronym.

The lesson on the attention economy that we are getting from Trump is that each “distraction” doesn’t necessarily have to be meaningless, but rather that each lessens the impact of all the others. Perhaps “distraction” wasn’t quite the right word in my previous comment, but instead I guess I mean, “Does anyone else think Disney created and ‘solved’ this problem with Kimmel as a means of making it so that when the price drop is getting more discussed over the next couple months, attention paid to that will be somewhat clouded by this event?”

I’m aware there are also flaws to the strategy. If any company manufacturers one error to make another potentially less problematic, they still have to suffer the fallout from the first one. The net result can easily be worse than if just the second happened in isolation. The president gets to live in a world where he is extremely difficult to fire/cancel/get rid of for the next 3+ years, and so many of the fires he sets are meant to achieve some end of their own, however petty they may be.
