Bullies will get their way until someone stands up to them. It’s always been this way. All these politicians thinking there’s nuance to these situations forget that they’re dealing with a guy who doesn’t understand, or see any need for, nuance. He’s a bully doing whatever fancies himself. He’ll keep doing it until leaders start standing up to him. You can’t negotiate with bullies. Everything is a zero-sum-game to them. The only way you can “be clever” is to fool him into thinking he’s “won” something.

I’m not sure it did. These ghouls don’t care who’s in charge and whether or not they’re an insane fascist, as long as the economy keeps chugging on and the rich keep getting richer. Their “values” are exactly those of whoever is in charge. Scare quotes because the only thing they actually value is money.
Yes, that’s what I meant. What you describe is the monster under the mask.
