Summary

Trump signed an executive order requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, mandating passports or government IDs.

Critics say the order could disenfranchise millions and faces likely legal challenges, as federal law only requires voters to swear citizenship under penalty of perjury.

Experts argue Trump lacks authority to change federal election rules, as the Constitution grants that power to Congress and states.

The order also bans election equipment using QR codes and mandates ballots be received by Election Day, overriding existing state laws.

Isn’t it a violation of civil rights to send immigrants to foreign prisons for crimes they probably didn’t even commit? Isn’t it illegal to defy court orders? It all should have consequences, but “should” doesn’t buy as much “will” as it used to.

The difference here is that the federal government doesn’t run elections, states do. Obviously, Trump is trying to set up a way to invalidate future elections, but Trump doesn’t have power on who can vote.

The Constitution sets the requirements for who can vote, and states cannot override those requirements or impose additional requirements. That’s why voter suppression relies so much on procedural fuckery like purging of voter lists and selectively shutting down polling places.
